Using a mobility scooter in Spain

Prepare to use your mobility scooter in Spain: discuss the vehicle category, your local routes and transport requirements before buying.

Start with the actual vehicle

Mobility aids, seated vehicles and electric kick scooters should not be treated as interchangeable. The documentation and intended purpose of the specific model matter. Do not infer a right to use a vehicle on the road or pavement from its advertising name or top speed.

Spain has its own requirements

Before buying, check the requirements for your vehicle and intended use, including driving authorisation, insurance and registration where applicable. Dutch and British rules do not automatically apply to a vehicle used in Spain. We do not make a blanket “no licence needed” promise.

Local routes and public transport

Consult the municipality for the places you intend to visit and the operator for any bus or train journey. Give the operator the actual dimensions and combined load. Acceptance by one operator should not be taken as approval by another.

Where to check

Use the Spanish traffic authority DGT, the official BOE legislation database and the relevant municipality or transport operator. Ask for a model-specific explanation before committing to a purchase. This page is a preparation guide, not a determination of a particular vehicle’s legal classification.
